Home Grown Opens Friday Nov 8th at the Cornelius Arts Center

Home Grown Opens Friday, Nov, 8, at the Cornelius Arts Center

Much has been said and written here lately about the arts scene in Cornelius. And with the passage of the town bond packages on Nov. 5, the town is poised to move full steam ahead in an arts related direction. One bond addresses the current and future needs of the Parks, Arts, Recreation and Culture (PARC) department, while the other spells out revitalization efforts to take place in the downtown corridor with plans to bring us, among other things, an outdoor amphitheater and brand new arts center building, possibly in the Antiquity Neighborhood.

An integral part of this burgeoning arts scene is the Cornelius Arts Center, doing just fine in its present location. Tucked away at the end of the historic Oak Street Mill behind the Cornelius Police Department, newly curated shows in the gallery are bringing high quality exhibits to the community. The latest opens with an artists reception Friday, Nov 8th, from 6:30-9pm.

Home Grown features the work of local artists in a variety of mediums from Cornelius and the surrounding area, including Charlotte. While the show is not juried, it will serve as a platform for a public art component. Three pieces will be chosen, and those artists will have the opportunity to showcase their work as murals in some of the old windows at Oak Street Mill. With every submission guaranteed a spot in the show, the work on display should be vastly diverse.

The event, happening in conjunction with the ever popular 2nd Friday Art Crawl, promises live music, food samples by Fork, and wine and beer tastings offered by Indies+Docs, the growing “Pop Up Cinema” series taking off at the Cornelius Arts Center.

Music, food, beer, wine and art. What more do you need for a fun night out?

Unable to make it Friday night? No problem. The show runs until Jan. 6. Gallery hours are 9am-5pm Mon-Thurs and 9am-Noon Fri-Sat (closed Sunday.) 19725 Oak Street Mill, Unit 1, Cornelius NC 28031. (704) 896-8823.  www.cornelius.org.
